Minesweeper: Play online for free, no download required

Minesweeper is a tense, fast-paced logic puzzle where one mistake can end the game immediately. Like Sea Battle, it requires deduction and strategy to clear the board safely.

Manual

Goal: Reveal all non-mine squares on the board while avoiding hidden mines. You win when all safe squares are open or when all mines are correctly flagged, depending on the variant.

The Board

  • Numbers: Each revealed number shows how many mines are in the eight neighboring squares around it, with fewer on edges and corners.
  • Flags: Use flags to mark squares you believe contain mines. Flags help you keep track of your logic and stop accidental clicks in danger zones.

Controls

  • Left Click: Reveal a square. If it’s safe, you’ll see either a blank (no mines nearby) or a number clue.
  • Right Click / Long Press: Place or remove a flag to mark a suspected mine.
  • First Click: In most modern versions, the first click is always safe. It usually opens a region with no adjacent mines, giving you a starting point.

Patterns

  • 1–1 Pattern (against a wall)When you see two adjacent “1”s along a border with two unknown squares ahead, there are standard setups where every third square out from that line is guaranteed safe; this type of pattern helps avoid guesswork.
  • 1–2–1 PatternA classic arrangement where a “2” is flanked by “1”s in a straight line. In this common version of the pattern, the mines are under the “1”s, and the square between them is safe.
  • EfficiencyFlagging helps with clarity, but it’s not strictly necessary to win. Experienced players often use fewer flags and rely on mental tracking, focusing instead on quickly uncovering safe squares using known patterns.

Origins

Minesweeper’s history goes back to logic and puzzle games from the mainframe era in the 1960s and 1970s. It became iconic when Microsoft included a version of Minesweeper with Windows in the early 1990s. This helped users practice precise mouse control, left and right clicking, and general pointer accuracy.

Logic

Deductive Reasoning

Every number sets a limit. If a “1” touches only one unrevealed square, that square must be a mine. If this leads to contradictions with nearby numbers, then the opposite must be true.

Focus

Since one misclick can end the game (often called “permadeath”), Minesweeper requires strong concentration and careful checks before making each move.

Minesweeper FAQ

Is it luck?

For most of the game, Minesweeper relies purely on logic. Some advanced boards, especially at expert level, create “50/50” scenarios where you have to guess between equally plausible options.

What does the 3 mean?

A “3” on a revealed square means that exactly three of the adjacent unrevealed squares contain mines. Use this information along with neighboring numbers to figure out which tiles are safe to open and which should be flagged.
