Rules
Goal: Create at least one tile with the value 2048 on a 4x4 grid by sliding and merging numbered tiles. You can keep playing beyond 2048 if the board allows for higher tiles.
Grid
- 4x4 Board: The game starts with two tiles, each showing either 2 or 4, placed randomly in empty positions.
- Swipe: Each move (Up, Down, Left, or Right) causes all tiles to slide as far as they can in that direction until they hit the edge of the board or another tile.
Mechanics
- Merge: When two tiles with the same value collide during a move, they merge into one tile whose value is their sum, like 2+2=4 or 8+8=16. This also adds that value to your score.
- Spawn: After each valid move, a new tile (normally a 2, sometimes a 4) appears in a random empty cell. This slowly fills the board and adds pressure. The game ends when there are no empty spaces and no adjacent tiles with the same value, leaving no legal moves.
Corner Strategy
- The CornerChoose one corner, often a bottom corner, as the home for your highest tile and play to keep this tile anchored there. This gives the board stability and prevents your largest tile from getting lost in the center chaos.
- Snake ChainCreate a descending “snake” of tiles curving away from your corner. Arrange numbers so each row or column next to the corner decreases in value. This setup makes merges straightforward and helps feed smaller tiles into your main chain smoothly.
- Avoid Opposite SwipesIf your anchor corner is at the bottom, avoid swiping Up whenever possible. This risks moving your highest tile out of position and ruining your structure.
History
2048 was created in March 2014 by Italian web developer Gabriele Cirulli as a free, open-source browser game made in a single weekend. The design took inspiration from earlier number-merging games, especially 1024 by Veewo Studio and Threes by Asher Vollmer. However, 2048’s minimalist style and accessibility made it a viral worldwide success.

On a standard 4x4 board, the highest possible tile is 131,072 under ideal conditions, but reaching this requires nearly perfect play and very favorable tile appearances.
Can I undo?
Classic 2048 does not have an undo feature; every move is final. Some versions may include an undo option or other assists, but the original game focuses on committing to each decision.
